According to http://www.brainyquote.com/top_100_quotes, the following are the top 10 quotes of all time:
Wow. To think that these are the greatest quotes of all time, which I would stretch to say that these are the quotes that most people consider some of the most inspiring and motivational words that encourage and lift the spirits of those who read them OF ALL TIME…
Then I go on Facebook… or Twitter… or turn on the news… or just try to have a dialog with someone about something… and it turns into some politically charged conversation or dialog around why someone is right, hurt feelings or heaven forbid the most disparaging words of our culture today, “I’m offended by that!”
In the last 12 hours, I have read 3 people’s posts on Facebook about how they are just “done” with Facebook and the inability to have a civil conversation, how they are going to delete followers and if it’s you, don’t be offended. Yet, I have seen these same people post opposing views and take stands for what they feel is right. Sometimes baiting, sometimes just simply trying to share their point of view in a mature and concise manner. Regardless of which, someone out there is going to have an opposing viewpoint and will not have the discipline to simply scroll past it… they will feel empowered behind their tiny screen and feel that it is ok to blast that other person with THEIR opinion only to create a back and forth with those on the other side of that coin.
It is exhausting… social media has turned into something that is just flat exhausting… a world of comparison instead of relationship. A world where we all get to star in our own little movie of our lives, sharing only what we want people to see. And yet, people CHOOSE to be negative!?!? I don’t understand that part more than anything else…
What does all of this have to do with the top 10 quotes? I’m glad you asked.
As I read through the quotes, there are some key themes that jumped out at me and therefore leads me to believe that most people what these things for themselves and for others:
- To be understood
- To be a person of action
- Forgiveness… to give it and receive it
- To not worry about tomorrow
- To put in the work today to plant the seeds that will provide for our tomorrow
- Serving others
- To have influence
- To see the beauty in our lives and in this world
- And the greatest of these… LOVE! Love for others and love for ourselves.
To choose a quote that did not make the Top 10 but will serve as a challenge to us all today:
“Be the change you want to see in the world.” – Ghandi
As you go into your day, I challenge you to seek to understand before seeking to be understood, be a person of action, forgive because God has forgiven you, do not worry about tomorrow, today has enough to deal with; plant seeds in yourself and in others that they are loved, serve others – take the focus off of yourself and plant it firmly on those you come in contact with, influence – can be as simple as a smile or a hello to someone in the hallway, look for the beauty in all things, let yourself experience JOY, have faith, have hope and above all, LOVE GOD and LOVE OTHERS!
